CHALLENGE
The Outfitter App (OUTFTR) was my final project for General Assembly’s User Experience Design course (Winter 2019-2020). The ask was to find a problem and develop its solution: in this case, a way to reproduce your favorite craft cocktail at home with minimal fuss and no waste. The name came from the idea of outfitting services that provided supplies and equipment to those headed out to the wilderness. Through the course, the project took a number of turns as lockdowns across the country caused many businesses to adopt similar measures to those I was researching.
ACTION
During the course and my work on OUTFTR, I learned how to test my initial ideas through live interviews, surveys, and affinity mapping. I was also able to indulge my inner design geek by developing branding based on some deep cuts I found on the National Archives site a while back. The (whole) final case study can be viewed here if you’re interested.
RESULT
There were a number of “end results” that came out of this project. Aside from learning the basic principles and best practices of user experience design, I was also happy to:
Learn both Sketch and Adobe XD
Become very familiar with Google Docs’ survey templates
Re-learn how to make and use a spreadsheet
Write good interview questions
And, in the end, I also feel like many of the research techniques also helped me to become a stronger creative in general.
